swallows

I perhaps should have suspected
as we watched swallows gather
in punctuated groups on high-wire lines
that this would be an end

I noted how they were crotchets on a stave
you rejected the cliché
but at that moment
as if to save me
from an open window a nocturne played
and became the cooling breath
of that September evening
finding its way to an imperfect cadence
classic pianissimo
the music dying
into an uproarious silence
between us

and your attention drifted
to a purple horizon
where the moon was climbing -
a cream minim
floating in ink

my hand found your shoulder
and thoughtless fingers
played the coarse seam
of your cotton white blouse
creeping from soft nape
to the shrug at the joint
I sensed your tension
and the chilling breeze

and now you are no longer here
to empty my thoughts
and I swallow the lyrics I wish I had sung

vis-à-vis love

Please allow me to list
some features of yours
deserving of a mention:
viz,
your lips, your eyes
your shapely thighs.
Do you follow my gist?
(There are others I’ve missed.)

Allow me to note
some personal flaws
I should bring to your attention:
viz,
my increasing size,
a predilection for lies,
though they stick in my throat .

I could catalogue
what I love about you
in the hope of redemption:
viz,
your smile, your charms
your money, my arms.
(Oh, I am such a dog!)

I would briefly relate
why you should
reciprocate:
viz,
my shining good looks,
my library of books.
(But have I left it too late?)

Wait! –

Before you walk away
please allow me to say
that between
you and me,
vis-à-vis love,
there could be
a passionate courting,
a wooing, resorting
to flowers,
chocolate, showers
of kisses,
an assault of the senses,
your crumbling defences,
champagne in the park,
fumbling after dark.

These are the ways I would love you:
namely,
gamely, madly.

Should you leave
I would grieve.
How would I beat my retreat?

Lamely, sadly.

The Martian Schoolgirl

I was in love with a Martian Schoolgirl
Her eyes were green as steel
She fired her poison darts at me
And taught me how to feel.

I was in love with a Martian Schoolgirl
I followed her into space
But if I tried to kiss her
She slapped me round the face.

I was in love with a Martian Schoolgirl
Her hair was as dark as the dead.
She flew in her little spaghetti craft
Three feet above my head.

I was in love with a Martian Schoolgirl
She sang as sweet as the night
She put out a single on Cherry Red Records
But they banned it out of spite.

I was in love with a Martian Schoolgirl
The pick of the Martian crop
I wanted her to love me back
Then I couldn’t make her stop.

I was in love with a Martian Schoolgirl
But she didn’t treat me right
She drank my blood in the bike shed
And kept me out all night.

I was in love with a Martian Schoolgirl
An earthbound schoolboy’s dream
She never even learned my name
But she taught me how to scream.

Now Martian Schoolgirls come and go
And this one came and went
And the currency of my human heart

Has all been spent.

Coke

when
Eve visited
we sat alone
together
in the
John Peel
Café sharing
cola from a tall
glass bottle on the
 red formica between us

she drew on her cigarette
and blew smoking bubbles
through the brown liquid

her coal black eyes
her lips smiling
round the straw

and smoke rising

Getting The Message

Walking through town
lovely Claire says
Here,
lend me a five p.

I fish one from my pocket
and hand it to her.

She takes it
then after a moment
aggressively
quickens her pace
leaving me in her wake.

Two yards ahead
she flings the coin
extravagantly
to the pavement

- the sound of metal
hitting concrete,
cold and brittle –

And that’s what I think of your ring!
she announces.

And strides off
leaving me
speechless and blushing
amongst

baffled and pitying
onlookers.
